Whistler Community Services Society (WCSS), in partnership with CHBA Sea to Sky, the Whistler Blackcwcssomb Foundation, the Resort Municipality of Whistler plans to open its second social enterprise, the Re-Build-It Centre (RBI), in the early fall of 2009. The RBI will sell donated used building supplies with all profits going to fund WCSS social service programs in Whistler. The store will be located in the Callaghan Valley where prices will range between 50 – 75% off regular retail prices. The RBI will offer a pickup service and “velvet glove” deconstruction services for a reasonable fee and pans for the facility include an in-store and an on-line “green building” library along with discussion forums for sharing ideas and “how to” workshops relating to home repair, maintenance and “do it yourself” renovations.

According to the EPA, 60-95% of the material in a typical home could be kept out of landfills if the effort is made to recover it. The Re-Build it Centre will reduce among other things: consumption of natural resources; consumption of energy and water; air pollution, material waste and greenhouse gas emissions. One metric tonne of construction waste diverted from the Callaghan waste transfer site will save 28 kg of greenhouse gases from the waste transportation to its end destination alone.
